Winter in Spring

It has been snowing for the past two days….yes in April. Welcome to Utah! Usually I would be livid (and I kind of am) but it gave me the opportunity to take some really neat pictures!

Today was a big day for me. (And this just goes to show what a beginner I am) but I actually outsmarted my fancy camera today. It’s kind of intimidating to be holding a machine that can, most of the time, take the best shot with the right settings all on its own. But I’ve been forcing myself to take it off ‘auto’ and take care of all of the settings manually. And today, my marvelous brain trumped the machine! Here’s what happened…

As you can see in the pictures, it’s very snowy. Snow means more light reflected off the white surfaces. I knew the camera would see all this ‘whiteness’ as bright light and in turn would automatically close down the aperture (make the hole in the lense smaller to decrease the amount of light coming in). But I knew that I would want a wider aperture, seeing as how it is a very overcast day and there really wouldn’t be as much light coming into the camera as the camera would think! Genius, Michelle! So I took a few shots on my manual settings, and then just for kicks, switched it over to automatic and the shots were way too dark. And there it is, proof that I knew better! My small, personal triumph. Maybe I can be a photographer after all.

Isn’t this tree amazing? I think it’s weeping because it’s winter.

Which ones do you like the best? They turned out darker and not as sharp as I thought they would. Keep in mind I’m a beginner!
